Vascular Medicine and Endovascular Intervention Fellowship

The Vascular Medicine and Endovascular Intervention Fellowship at the Seymour, Paul and Gloria Milstein Division of Cardiology at Columbia University Irving Medical Center is comprised of a single year of advanced interventional and vascular medicine training supervised by the faculty of Columbia's Interventional Cardiovascular Care program.

The curriculum offers training in both the cognitive and procedural skills necessary to practice vascular medicine and intervention within the context of a multidisciplinary care team. Trainees will participate in the management of a broad array of vascular disease states that subsume the breadth of vascular medicine in a variety of environments ranging from inpatient services to outpatient clinics and of course within the catheterization laboratory.  Fellows are expected to have completed ACGME accredited (or international equivalent) training programs in both cardiovascular disease and interventional cardiology and be board certified in cardiovascular disease and board-eligible in interventional cardiology with a strong, demonstrated interest and academic productivity in vascular medicine and interventional cardiology.

Clinical Experience

The Vascular Medicine and Intervention Fellowship program provides training for up to two fellows every year preparing trainees for board certification via the American Board of Vascular Medicine in vascular medicine and in endovascular medicine as well as the ARDMS certification as a registered physician for vascular interpretation (RPVI).  Our fellows care for patients with complex cardiovascular disease including peripheral arterial occlusive disease, complex venous thromboembolic disease, and insufficiency, cerebrovascular disease, and abdominal aortic aneurysms. In addition, the vascular medicine and intervention service at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center has a busy consultative inpatient practice that manages or provides consultative assistance in the care of a broad spectrum of inpatients on a daily basis. In addition, fellows will continue to participate in on call coverage for coronary intervention as well as performing coronary interventions with senior faculty during their fellowship year.  Moreover, each fellow is expected to participate in at least one half day per week of continuity clinic with our faculty. 

Supervised by experienced academic faculty, fellows should expect excellent preparation in the context of a wide array of endovascular interventions noted below. Typical trainees participate in over 300 to 400 interventional procedures with additional experience in diagnostic angiography.

• Arteriography and Endovascular Intervention
  • Lower Extremity Vessels: Iliac, Femoral, Below-the-knee
  • Carotid, Subclavian, Vertebral
  • Renal
  • Mesenteric
  • Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm and Aortic Occlusive Disease
• Venous Angiography and Intervention
  • Thrombolysis (systemic or catheter directed including suction embolectomy)
  • Angioplasty and Stenting
  • IVC Filter placement and retrieval

Research

Academic development is important part of the training program. Fellows can participate in a variety of research initiatives available within Columbia Interventional Cardiovascular Care. Fellows integrally participate in all of the multiple randomized control clinical trials ongoing within the center with the opportunity to participate in the design and execution of investigator-initiated research with appropriate faculty mentorship. Fellows routinely submit original abstracts for publication and presentation and participate in the writing of invited reviews, chapters, and other scholarly activities.

Conferences

Fellows will participate in a number of multidisciplinary educational conferences.  Fellows will present at weekly catheterization conference within Columbia Interventional Cardiovascular Care as well as monthly interdisciplinary vascular conferences with our colleagues in vascular surgery, with whom we share a very close working relationship.
